Vernon is a small community on the banks of the Okanagan River in the South Interior of British Columbia, Canada. It's located at the confluence of the Okanagan and Cariboo Rivers. The area surrounding the towns of Vernon and Okanagan is known as Okanagan Country. It was here that the first British settlers arrived in what is now BC.
The City of Vernon is a thriving community of about fourteen thousand located on the banks of the Okanagan River in what is now BC. It was originally designated as a town to serve as a headquarters for the fur trade based around the Okanagan. Named after George Vernon, MLA of British Columbia who also helped establish the first Coldstream Ranch near Coldstream, the City of Vernon was incorporated on December 30th, 18 92. With a history so brief, it's easy to forget some of the important places in this beautiful region. One of those places is the Okanagan Settlement Museum. This two hundred-year-old building is filled with photographs, artifacts and also includes a park with a golf course. This unique place is a great day trip or overnight stop for visitors to British Columbia and Vernon. Another monument in Vernon is the British Columbia Museum. This three-storey building is a modern interpretation of an ancient Mayan village. Within this museum are many spectacular artifacts including the terracotta warriors, ceremonial pottery and stone sculptures. This beautiful place is also home to an interpretative center where visitors can find out more about the history of the area. The Sunshine Coast is also important when talking about British Columbia landmarks. The Sunshine Coast is home to many parks, beaches and natural wonders. Among these places include Sunshine Coast National Park and Ecola Gorge National Park. These parks are home to several notable attractions such as the Sunshine Coast Science Centre, Robson Beach and the Sunshine Coast National Marine Parks. These parks are a great place to enjoy the beautiful Pacific weather. If you like any of the British Columbia landmarks I mentioned in this article, you should definitely make a trip to Vernon. It's only forty-five minutes from Vancouver and it has everything you could possibly want or need from a national landmark to local history and attractions. If you haven't been to Vernon yet, you're making a mistake. It's a beautiful place with a rich history. |
